Directed by Jacques Rivette • 2001 • France
Starring Jeanne Balibar, Marianne Basler, Sergio Castellitto
One of director Jacques Rivette’s most purely delightful works, this fanciful tale of love and art trains a wittily ironic eye on the intersecting relationships between a coterie of bohemian intellectuals swirling around the Parisian theater scene. Among the players are Camille (Jeanne Balibar), an actor who has returned to France after three years in Italy to star in a production of Pirandello’s “As You Desire Me” and who must now confront the man she left behind; Ugo (Sergio Castellitto), the famed director and Camille’s lover, whose ulterior motive for coming to Paris is to uncover a long-lost, unpublished manuscript by the playwright Carlo Goldoni; and Dominique (Hélène de Fougerolles) the enigmatic student who becomes entwined in both their lives.
