Directed by Joan Micklin Silver • 1988 • United States
Starring Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, David Hyde Pierce
Joan Micklin Silver’s wonderfully, warmly Jewish spin on the romantic comedy follows literary, uptown-dwelling Manhattanite Izzy Grossman (a luminous Amy Irving), who finds herself caught between the worldly European poet (Jeroen Krabbé) she’s enamored with and the humble pickle salesman (Peter Riegert) her matchmaking Lower East Side Bubbie (a scene-stealing Reizl Bozyk) foists upon her. Eschewing the standard rom-com playbook for something richer and more complex, Crossing Delancey is a refreshingly nuanced look at the conundrum faced by women in the “have it all” ’80s.
