Between directing epic spectacles like THE SIGN OF THE CROSS and CLEOPATRA, classic Hollywood’s ultimate showman Cecil B. DeMille helmed this oft-overlooked, racily pre-Code jungle-survival adventure in which four people—including a buttoned-up schoolteacher (Claudette Colbert), a chemist (Herbert Marshall), and a wisecracking aristocrat (Mary Boland)—flee a bubonic plague-infested ship only to end up lost in the Malayan wilderness. There, they gradually shed the vestiges of civilization as they confront both the wrath of nature and their own previously repressed instincts.
