Intrigue unfolds within the cloistered world of a convent in this atmospheric mystery-melodrama from Douglas Sirk. A torrential rainstorm forces convicted murderer Valerie Carns (Ann Blyth)—who is being escorted to death row by a brace of guards—to take refuge at a nunnery whose hospital is presided over by Sister Mary (Claudette Colbert). As she gradually comes to believe that Valerie is innocent, Sister Mary sets out to clear the girl’s name and bring the true killer to justice—culminating in a superb, shadow-laden climax in the convent’s bell tower.
