Actor and early French New Wave regular Nicole Berger is at the center of two romantic trysts in these foundational works by revolutionary film artists. First, Berger is one of two best friends who are pursued by the same scumbag womanizer in Jean-Luc Godard’s breezy short ALL THE BOYS ARE CALLED PATRICK, written by Eric Rohmer and made just prior to the epoch-shaking BREATHLESS. It’s paired with another nouvelle vague classique, Melvin Van Peebles’s stylistically freewheeling, stingingly subversive portrait of an interracial romance THE STORY OF A THREE DAY PASS, which features the luminous Berger’s final performance before her untimely death in a car accident at age thirty-two.
