Finding her homeless and half-starved, happy-go-lucky wanderer Bill (Spencer Tracy) takes in Trina (Loretta Young) to stay with him and the other eccentric denizens of a New York City shantytown. Ignoring all his warnings against becoming attached, Trina falls for Bill. However, just as Bill is leaving for Paris with a showgirl, news that Trina is pregnant causes Bill to cancel his plans. Determined to leave once he’s provided for Trina and the baby, he sets out to raise some cash by enlisting a friend to help with a robbery. But when the plan backfires and Bill is wounded, it falls to another of the encampment’s broken-down drifters to save the couple.
