Directed by Nick Grinde • 1932 • United States
Starring Barbara Stanwyck, Regis Toomey, ZaSu Pitts
Barbara Stanwyck brings her trademark grit and gumption to one of her memorable early performances in this class-conscious melodrama. She plays Kitty Lane, a poor working girl whose engagement to the wealthy David Livingston (Regis Toomey) is met with opposition by his scheming mother, who will stop at nothing to break up the impending marriage—including using her influence to have Kitty thrown in jail. The tables turn, however, when Kitty is released and transforms herself into a sensation on the stage.
