Love blossoms in the unlikeliest of places—the muddy underground river tunnels of New York City—in this screwball delight directed with characteristic panache by Mitchell Leisen. After ace photojournalist Katherine Grant (Claudette Colbert) inadvertently gets hunky sandhog Jim Ryan (Fred MacMurray) suspended from his tunnel-digging job, she hires him to assist her in his off-time. Initial conflict gradually leads to attraction as the sophisticated photog falls for the macho he-man—leading to some memorably mucky hijinks in the tunnels beneath the Hudson River.
