Directed by Wesley Ruggles • 1935 • United States
Starring Claudette Colbert, Fred MacMurray, Ray Milland
Claudette Colbert is at her effortlessly charming best in this oft-overlooked, Depression-era romantic-comedy gem. She stars as Marilyn David, a New York City stenographer whose close friend, cynical reporter Peter Dawes (Fred MacMurray, in the first of seven pairings with Colbert), is heartbroken when she informs him that she has fallen in love with visiting Englishman Charles Gray (Ray Milland). Unbeknownst to Marilyn, Gray is actually a wealthy, already-engaged nobleman—propelling all three into the center of a tabloid scandal that makes the now-notorious Marilyn the toast of the town.
