Intense, handsome, and gifted with a rare capacity for conveying inner turmoil and doubt, Jean-Louis Trintignant was one of the greatest actors of European art-house cinema, bringing intelligence and passion to carefully crafted performances in a number of all-time classics. After early success as a stage actor, he rose to fame in films like AND GOD CREATED WOMAN, playing opposite Brigitte Bardot. In the 1960s, his knack for dramatizing intellectual conflict was on brilliant display in Eric Rohmer’s MY NIGHT AT MAUD’S and Costa-Gavras’s Z, the latter earning him a Best Actor award at Cannes. Later in life he became something of an elder statesmen of international art film, lending his gravity to masterpieces like THREE COLORS: RED.
