The Company
Directed by Robert Altman • 2003 • United States
Starring Neve Campbell, Malcolm McDowell, James Franco
Robert Altman applies his ever-expansive vision to the intricate inner workings of a ballet company in this almost documentary-like backstage saga. Made in collaboration with Chicago’s renowned Joffrey Ballet, THE COMPANY follows Ry (Neve Campbell, herself a trained dancer and coproducer on the film) as she rises through the ranks of the corps while struggling to balance the rigorous demands of her profession with her personal and romantic life. Above all it’s the majesty of dance itself that fascinates Altman, and he films it with a grace and ease that is mesmerizing to behold.
