The Last of Sheila

The Last of Sheila

“If you, like me, had a strange obsession with ‘Gilligan’s Island’ as a child and now long for more boat-related capers, may I suggest THE LAST OF SHEILA? James Coburn plays it cool as the top-tier ensemble cast rotates around him, whipping themselves into a frenzy that will have you for once glad that you’re not adrift on the Mediterranean Sea.” —Alexandra C, Channel programming

Directed by Herbert Ross • 1973 • United States
Starring Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon, James Coburn

Wittily scripted by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim, this eccentric, all-star whodunnit is a dishy, devilish camp connoisseur’s delight. Amid raised voices at a Bel-Air party, the front door bursts open. Sheila runs from the mansion, away from her irate husband, Clinton Greene (James Coburn). A screech of brakes sounds beyond the driveway; Sheila is hit and dies. One year later to the day, Greene invites six Hollywood insiders (played by Raquel Welch, James Mason, Dyan Cannon, Richard Benjamin, Joan Hackett, and Ian McShane) who were present that fatal night aboard his yacht, the Sheila, anchored off of Nice, France, for a “murder game” devised to reveal his guest’s innermost secrets . . . a game that proceeds to an inexorable and surprising climax.
