Jean-Pierre Melville’s initial cut of LÉON MORIN, PRIEST ran over three hours. When he decided to focus on the relationship between Barny and Morin, however, he eliminated many scenes depicting life during wartime, such as the two presented here. In the first scene, the Gestapo patrols the town, and rumors of executions run rampant; in the second, Barny unknowingly befriends a collaborator.
