The Flame of New Orleans
1h 19m
Directed by René Clair • 1941 • United States
Starring Marlene Dietrich, Bruce Cabot, Roland Young
French director René Clair brings a touch of continental élan to this saucy, Production Code–defying romantic comedy, the first of four films he made in Hollywood, with Marlene Dietrich at her coquettish best as Claire Ledeux, a nineteenth-century French adventuress who arrives in old New Orleans with one goal in mind: marrying a wealthy man. Posing as a pillar of society and a woman of means, Claire must go to increasingly elaborate lengths to maintain her ruse as she pursues romance with both a wealthy banker (Roland Young) and a strapping ship’s captain (Bruce Cabot).
